Ohio State (3-1) and Cincinnati (3-2) fell into the consolation bracket at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii, and on Tuesday the programs will meet for just the fifth time since the 1962 NCAA tournament championship game. The Buckeyes have reached the tournament every season one has been held since coach Chris Hoffman came to Columbus in 2017 but have yet to advance to the second weekend. Hoffman, now in his sixth season, is 110-57 at Ohio State. Wes Miller is in his second season with the Bearcats and is 21-17. UC hasn’t played in the postseason since the 2019 NCAA tourney.

Ohio State trailed by 14 points early in the second half against No. 17 San Diego State in Monday’s quarterfinal but closed the gap to four before the Aztecs went on a 23-7 burst to go up by 16 with 9:58 left. The Buckeyes never got closer than seven after that. Sean McNeil scored 22 points for OSU and Bruce Thornton added 13.
In the final game of the day at the Lahaina Civic Center, Cincinnati trailed No. 14 Arizona by 10 at the break before the teams erupted for a combined 124 points in the second half. The Wildcats led by as much as 16 in the second half while handing the Bearcats a 101-93 loss. Landers Nolley II went for 33 points for UC and Viktor Lakhin added 17 in just 19 minutes.
It’s the 13th meeting between Ohio State and Cincinnati and the first since Nov. 6, 2019, in Columbus. The Buckeyes picked up a 64-56 win in that game, their fourth straight in the series, and lead 8-4 all-time.
