Northern Iowa (1-2) dropped its second straight game on Monday, losing in the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City. On Tuesday, the Panthers will try to stop their skid when they square off with Grand Canyon (3-2) at T-Mobile Center. Northern Iowa was an NIT participant last spring, losing in the second round, and hasn’t been to the NCAA tourney since 2016. The Antelopes missed the postseason in 2022 despite a 23-8 record after playing in their first NCAA tournament in 2021. Ben Jacobson is 321-202 in his 17th season at UNI while Bryce Drew is 43-17 in his third year at GCU.

The Panthers led unbeaten San Francisco by 15 points early in the second half before the Dons took over the game in the final 8:31, outscoring Northern Iowa 21-4 the rest of the way for a 75-69 win. James Betz led the Panthers with 19 points while Tytan Anderson had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Grand Canyon defended well, holding Wichita State to 38.3% shooting, but couldn’t get its offense on track in a 55-43 loss. The Antelopes hit just 27.1% overall and made only 4-of-23 (17.4%) from 3-point range. Noah Baumann was the lone scorer to reach double figures for GCU with 10 points.
Tuesday’s game is the third meeting between the programs. The series is tied 1-1 with Northern Iowa winning the last game on Dec. 12, 2019, in Phoenix by an 82-58 score.
