A Conroe man pretended to be a police officer after he was caught “skip scanning” at a Walmart in New Caney, authorities said.

Alan Benitez, 30, was stopped by a loss prevention officer on Sunday attempting to leave the store after placing an item into his checkout bag without scanning, according to a news release from the Montgomery County Constable’s Office Precinct 4.

The officer claimed Benitez said “It’s OK, I’m a cop,” before showing a badge.

Benitez was charged with False ID as a police officer, a class B misdemeanor, and received a citation for theft.

The sergeant who responded to the investigation was a part of the #SafeShopper program.
